What is this style?
This style is all about subtle sophistication that celebrates city living but also provides a comfortable and welcoming respite from it. It’s minimal - but not sparse - and quietly luxurious, based on open-plan living, a muted colour palette, and lots of natural light and simple window treatments. It’s not a style with a hard definition and easily identifiable elements, but more of a general direction for a cosmopolitan aesthetic found in trendy homes in most major cities - a mix of modern, contemporary and industrial styles.
Where did it come from? A bit of background information on the style would be good.
This style has been slowly emerging over the last few decades, with increased city dwelling, longer working hours and more hectic lifestyles (it’s projected that more than two-thirds of the world population will live in urban areas by 2050). It’s designed to create homes that are a calm, clutter-free and comfortable haven from the hustle and bustle outside of busy urban life, and the over-stimulation that we’re exposed to from increased use of technology.
How can our readers incorporate it in their homes?
Design elements include simple soft lines, low coffee tables of stone, concrete or wood, leather armchairs, mixed metal lamps, plush and layered rugs, throws and cushions scattered on low-set neutral coloured sofas. Incorporate modern aspirational designer pieces. You could go with a feature wall finished with a texture or a statement colour in a deep tone, along with modern abstract art. Create interest with lots of texture and keep patterns to a minimum.
What type of person/ lifestyle does the trend suit?
This style is for the city dweller who likes a refined minimal and modern look, but also wants a comfortable home to live in…someone who wants to feel like they’re part of the city, but also have their own safe cocoon when needed. Great for someone who wants their home to be a sophisticated and trendy statement about them.
Where would you recommend shopping for this style – which shops?
Crate and Barrel perfectly encapsulates this style. West Elm, Chattels & More, Ebarza, and Marina Home are also great options.
